Dr. Horrible Fic Saves the Day

So the first two acts of Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog rocked like a rocking thing, but the last act sucked hard. The songs were great, but if I have to watch yet another show where the main female character gets killed off for no good reason other than to create an emotional crisis for the hero, I'm going to spork my eyes out. No more refrigerators, for the love of god!

amaliedageek wrote Act III the way it should have been. Ah, that's much better.

ETA: spoiler cuts.

Okay, I have to admit, Act III of Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog was...kind of a let-down.

*is disappointed*

That was almost a perfect Doctor Who episode. Almost.

It would have been perfect, if it weren't for the part about Donna.

I'm sorry, Doctor, but you do not get to do that. You do not get to make Donna's choices for her. She fully understood what would happen to her -- just as much as you did -- and she still begged you not to mindwipe her. SO DON'T.

God, I hate these kinds of endings. HATE THEM. All that lovely character growth that Donna underwent, from "The Runaway Bride" to the deeply awesome Donna we had here at the end of Season Four -- all of it, poof! Gone in a heartbeat. That is not okay. That's seriously not okay. Donna has an extraordinary potential, but she also has some pretty serious self-doubts and truly believes that she's not good enough...a belief reinforced by her mother, who loves her but really does not understand her and who probably is afraid of losing her, and so ends up cutting Donna down to keep her with her. (At least, that's how I read Donna's mother. I don't think she knows she's doing it, though.)

This was Donna's worst nightmare. And the Doctor knew that and did it to her anyway.

Of course, after that montage of all the people who have died for him, I can understand why he would have done anything to save her life, even this...but he DAMN WELL better find a way around it and fix her. That's all I have to say.
Book Meme!

The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they've printed. Well let's see.

1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicise those you intend to read.
3) Underline the books you LOVE.

Two were taken out of the list because they were repetitive.

I also put an asterisk by those that I started but never finished.

1.
I fail at icon-making.

I was attempting to icon-ize a screencap from the SGA episode "Doppleganger," but was unable to get it to fit into the 100 pixel by 100 pixel square required by LJ. Eh. Still, it's very pretty, so here's the image if you want to look:

I realize that my journal has been pretty much content-free lately. I'm going to try to change that over the next few days.

New haircut!

And it looks fabulous. I cannot stop looking at myself in the mirror -- embarrassing but true.

I had long hair for several years, down to about my shoulderblades -- long and curly and thick. Well, summer is on it's way, and I just felt like it was time for a change, hopefully to something not so hot and heavy when it gets humid outside, as it tends to do in the summer months. I wasn't really expecting to get it cut so short when I went in to the salon today, but when my hairdresser suggested it, I just went, yes! Let's go for it!

It's a reverse bob (you know, when it's shorter in the back than it is in the front), and my hairdresser also straightened it out with a flat iron when she styled it. It looks so great! Sleek, sexy, sophisticated but also a little off-beat and funky. I LOVE it! It's shorter than I've had my hair in a loooong time, though -- it hits my neck somewhere inbetween my chin and my shoulders. I love the way it frames my face! And I can feel cool air hit the back of my neck for the first time in years. SO MUCH LOVE!

Of course, the sleekness will go away as soon as I wash my hair. Once it gets wet, poof! The curls will come back. But that's okay! I think it'll look good curly too.

(I wish I had a digital camera so I could post a pic. Alas, I do not.)

Is it silly to get so worked up over a haircut? Probably, but I can't seem to help it, so I'm just going to enjoy the new hair giddyness. Yay, hair!

Miscellaneous Stuff

I am somewhat impressed by the fact that I can spell the word miscellaneous correctly without looking it up. Go me!

We had lovely warm weather all weekend long, but today it is gray, cloudy, and cold. WTF, weather? Why do you want to be dragging me down like that?

I have been a very bad LJer lately, rarely posting and not even reading my flist for the last week or so. This is likely to remain unchanged through the month of April. Sorry. I hope nobody on my flist has been particularly profound or entertaining lately. If you were, I missed it. :( Is there a word for feeling slightly guilty for neglecting your flist?

Grad school is about to kill me. I have two major papers (one of which is about 80-90% finished, the other of which I do not even have a topic for yet), one presentation, and one flippin' humongous portfolio all due next week. I also have one class where there is nothing major due, but there are a hundred and one tiny little assignments that all add up into one big grade, and must all get done. It's like the death of a thousand papercuts, I swear.

On the plus side, only two more weeks until the end of the semester! Yay!

Also, remixthedrabble just posted the latest round of stories. There are all kinds of fandoms represented this time around, from big ones like SGA to little, rare fandoms. Check it out! Two of my own stories were remixed, here and here. They're both very well done. I recommend them!

Free books! Also, ack! Stealth paper!

I've just discovered a book trading website that has caught my fancy: Book Mooch. I like the way it's organized, and also the very cute image and name. I'm shallow that way.

I have also made the much less pleasant discovery that I have a 10 page research paper due in one of my classes next week. Which, bleargh. I mean, I knew I had a research paper to write for that class, but I thought it would be due at the end of the semester, like, a month from now. I suppose I should be glad that I happened to glance at the due date on the syllabus today!

I don't think I've written a research paper since the 11th grade (which was more years ago now than I care to admit). Also, it's supposed to be done in APA format, which I am completely unfamiliar with. What's wrong with good old, trusty MLA, I ask you? Hrmph.

I suppose I better get to the library tomorrow and start with the, you know, actual research.

It is completely, utterly awesome -- a extremely fun, satisfying story about John and Rodney on vacation on earth; Rodney takes a temporary job with an engineering company and everyone mistakes John for his boyfriend, and then there's some action-y stuff that happens, and it's just awesome. I fail at vocabulary right now, because I am tired, but even so -- it's good. Read it.

Looking for a lost story.

Is there a Firefly equivalent to the community sgastoryfinders? I'm trying to find a Firefly/SG-1 crossover that I read a while ago, and I don't know where to look! The SG-1 aspect was minimal -- it was really a Firefly story with a cameo appearance from Ascended!Daniel (a fix-it for Wash's death in the movie) -- so I would like to look around for in on a Firefly comm, but I don't know where to go to find one.

Damnit.

So John Edwards dropped out of the race, and now I have to figure out who I'm going to vote for instead on Tuesday. I just don't really like Clinton, but Obama, while very charismatic, just doesn't seem entirely trustworthy to me. What I mean by that is I don't think he'll stand by everything he purports now. I don't trust him to have a backbone and do all the things he says he'll do. But, given those two choices, he's the one I'll probably end up voting for.

Grrr. Why couldn't Edwards have stuck it out for a few more days? I know there's no way he could have won the nomination, but I would have been happy to vote for him nonetheless.

I don't know. Argh! Who are you guys going to vote for? (Or, if your state has already had its primary, who did you vote for? Or if you're not an American but have been following our politics, who would you vote for if you were?)

I updated my website with the stories I wrote for yuletide this year. They are:

Family Ties, a Miracles story written for deejay

A Morning Conversation, a Medium story written as a treat for brightbear.

And it turns out that sailorhathor wrote my wonderful story! Thank you so much! It's funny what a small world yuletide can be...I guess because the fandoms involved are so small. deejay wrote my story last year, I wrote hers this year, I wrote a New Year's Resolution story for sailorhathor last year, she wrote a story for me this year...and around it goes.

My Kyle XY story/treat, on the other hand, was written by a complete stranger to me, fresne -- who also wrote the Pushing Daisies story I recced, so, once again, small world! Thank you, fresne!

Yuletide Recs

CONNIE WILLIS -- TO SAY NOTHING OF THE DOG
Finch's First Drop. Finch was one of my favorite secondary characters from the book, and this was a delightful look at how he ended up going back to the nineteenth century. With bonus Sherlock Holmes quotes!

No Man's Land. When Ned goes missing during a trip to London during the Blitz, it's up to Verity to find him. This was a fun postscript to the novel, and more Ned and Verity is always a good thing!

HOT FUZZ
Bend Hard. It's a modern action film. Danny and Nick just won my heart in this. A very sweet and funny epilogue to the film.

Film Studies. Danny Butterman has a Plan, and god help the forces of darkness that may try to stop him. This story made me laugh. Great fun.

The White Lights and the Blue. "Oh no, dear," she said, wringing her hands. "I suppose that must be where the spaceship landed." I loved the plot in this, and Nick's hilariously subtle attempts to woo Danny. Plus, a stealth crossover at the end for the win!

KYLE XY
Meaning of a Word. The word broyay isn't exactly in the dictionary. The only Kyle XY story in the archive, and it was written for me! I love Yuletide treats. I also love the rhythm of the prose in this story, and the wonderfully written look inside of Kyle's head. Well done.

MIRACLES
Fallen Creatures. Hennas Crossing is a sinister place, filled with unfriendly people with questionable motives. On the way to help an old friend of Poppi's, Paul makes a new friend of his own, someone both attractive and disturbing, and together they try to solve the puzzle of Hennas Crossing. Miracles prequel. Slash. This story blew me away. It's long -- really long! like, 125K long! -- and wonderfully plotty, a very gripping read. It's also a crossover with Supernatural, set during Sam's college days. So, no Sam, but lots and lots of lovely, lovely Dean. It also contains some really delicious love scenes.

Get With Child a Mandrake Root. A telephone call, a dead man, a trail that goes nowhere: Alva watches while Paul finds and loses and (perhaps) finds his father. This deals with one of the imo most intriguing unresolved storylines from the show -- Paul's father. It also has some really deft Alva characterization. Very well written.

Layers Within Layers, That One (Four Ways in which Alva Surprised Paul, and One Way He Didn't). Five slices of life for the members of SQ. This delightful story was written for me, so of course I loved it! Contains some absolutely adorable moments -- like Alva playing soccer with the two kids from "The Battle of Shadow Ridge" and Alva and Evelyn throwing a birthday party for Paul -- and some more dramatic, emotional moments. A great read!

PSYCH
Signs Point To. In which Shawn shifts his paradigm. This was Gus/Shawn slash, absolutely in character, very much in the tone of the show, and made me giggle like a madwoman. Delightful, charming fun.

PUSHING DAISIES
Purls Before Pie. Emerson knitted. He didn't crochet. People who couldn't tell the difference were damn fools who made Jebus the slack yokel seem like Dorothy Parker table dancing on the Algonquin, which is to say the height of drunken wit and sophistication. Ahahaha! OMG, I love, LOVE, Emerson in this story. ♥♥♥

QUANTUM LEAP
Long Time. One minute later. One minute later. One minute later. And then. Now this is the way the series should have ended.

WONDERFALLS
Jesus Complex. In which Jaye is institutionalized. Everybody and his brother has already recced this story, and that is because it is made of awesome. Seriously, go read it.

Yay! Yuletide bounty! *throw confetti*

I got two -- two! -- stories for yuletide this year!

First, an absolutely fabulous Miracles story: Layers Within Layers, That One (Four Ways in which Alva Surprised Paul, and One Way He Didn't). And with a title like that, how can you resist reading it?

And then, a bonus treat! A Kyle XY story: Meaning of a Word. It is also completely awesome.

I am so full of fannish glee right now -- and I haven't even had a chance to read any of the other stories in the archive yet! Yay!

FIC: "Ho, Ho, Ho" (Miracles, G)

So I wrote one last yuletide treat, but I wasn't quick enough to get it posted to the archive, and uploading is now locked down. deejay, this story is for you. Enjoy!

TITLE: Ho, Ho, Ho
AUTHOR: Melody
RATING: G
FANDOM: Miracles
WORD COUNT: 226
Crossposted to miracles_fanfic.

“I don’t know what you’re complaining about,” Alva said, infuriatingly calm.

Paul took a deep breath and counted to ten. “You don’t. Really? Not even a small clue?” He tugged at his collar, mentally cursing his ridiculous costume.

“The legend of Father Christmas is centuries old and almost universal.” His tone was dryly intellectual, but, even so, Paul could swear Alva was laughing at him. “Although traditions vary, almost every culture that celebrates Christmas has some version of the legend – Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas, Kris Kringle. Really, Paul, I’d think you’d leap at the chance to participate in a ritual involving such a wide-spread mythological archetype. It’s a golden opportunity, when you think about it.”

“Plus,” Evelyn said. “Think of how happy you’ll make all those children!” She was definitely laughing at him.

Paul scowled at the her. “I just don’t see why I have to be the elf.” This shade of green was not his color, and the curly toes of his shoes made it really hard to walk.

“Because,” Alva said. “The Santa suit fit me better.” He settled his fake beard into place, picked up the giant sack of presents and slung it over his shoulder. “Shall we be off?”

“God bless us, every one,” Paul said sourly, and went to get his coat.
